Artist Sues Corporation Over Art Theft, Again.

Unfortunately, it’s become a familiar story. Some corporate giant shamelessly steals the art decorating a city’s walls, and uses it to advertise their products. No communication with the artist, no interest in the person behind the work, and no thoughts of fair compensation. In this instance, the corporate giant is Michaels, and the artist in question is Jordan Nickel, aka Pose.
Pose recently issued a cease-and-desist after Michaels used his work without permission in an advertising campaign. In what has become a familiar move during cases like these, Michaels issued their own lawsuit, dismissing Pose’s claims of intellectual copyright infringement as “meritless.” They call the legality of the original art into question, and claim that no clear copyright of the work has been established.
Graffiti is undoubtedly art. If it wasn’t, companies wouldn’t be using it to catch people’s attention in advertisements.
It’s disrespect, plain and simple. The years of practice, the tireless dedication to getting up, the fine-tuning required to achieve the perfect piece, is all tossed aside in the face of corporate copyright jargon. This injustice is exactly why we at Local Legend Labs do what we do.
